I don't really understand why he needs a proprietary protocol/software... If wget is topped at 2.5MB/s and aspera reaches 35MB/s, then it must be the ftp server that is limiting the download speed. There is no magic, his bandwidth is the limit, aspera can't get faster than that... I've just tried it myself: wget I'm getting 2MB/s, multiple simultaneous connections with aria2c I'm getting 8MB/s (it's the max for me, I can't get faster than that).

Is it? I'm not sure if I buy this. If he had said "for very small files" maybe yes, but is HTTP really slow for large files? It can support chunked files download, and I can download distros which are several GB in size just fine.
