Replicant status and report of the 37C3 and FOSDEM 2024 conferences.

Oh great work of anroid-rebuilds continues! About the fact that fdroid doesn’t use FLOSS SDK I can confirm it. They don’t use FLOSS SDK more than a year https://gitlab.com/fdroid/admin/-/issues/355. If they did, they would point me to a floss version of sdk or something else. And IIRC I saw somewhere in the build scripts fact of the downloading from google…

I’ve found a thread where they say they use Android SDK because it’s the only way to build all the apps. But I don’t understand what’s the difference between Android SDK and the packages in Debian, for example. As far as I remember, the Android SDK binary was proprietary, but not the source. I’m not up to date though, so I don’t really understand.

You are absolutely correct

First of all debain version is outdated you can target android 6.0 but many apps aren’t for this version…

Building android sdk is a very complex thing, it is too bloated and to build it you also need proprietary tool(s). In general if you build sdk from source it won’t much differ from googles binary as like for any software where you build official code by yourself. Except the fact you won’t know how to do it properly to make stable because you won’t be allowed to know how to do it because android sdk is a piece of proprietary (but yeah just formally it is open source) trash…
