VLC or OBS for video acquisition?

I was wondering if you guys have experience with video acquisition. It’s something I’ve never done before, but I have some old VHS that I’d like to digitize before they get consumed by time. I have a USB input card (converts from SCART). What I’d like to know is whether it makes any difference the software that I use. I only know about VLC and OBS, I don’t know any other software that is capable of acquiring video.

https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Capture/Desktop ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ don’t know anything

I’ve used OBS and FFmpeg (not for VHS tho), and I’ve also used video capture cards (usually HDMI), but in this case I don’t think it matters really. Any quality loss is more likely to happen in that USB converter of yours. Besides, VHS is already very low quality. Perfect opportunity to test out some AI upscalers tho!

Is there any free software that can upscale videos? Sounds interesting to try, but I really don’t know much about multimedia editing

For videos: https://github.com/k4yt3x/video2x

For images: https://github.com/upscayl/upscayl

Both of those are licensed AGPL, at least.

Haven’t actually tested them tho, mostly I’ve upscaled images with this: https://github.com/AUTOMATIC1111/stable-diffusion-webui
