Deplatforming is not enough

I mean, it’s nice that some folks in power decided to finally choosing a side on bigotry or hate… Folks in power need to unite to defend those who need help from tyranny and oppression. Where were ye 4.5 years ago? Or the time before that or the time before that? I mean, even the “bad guys” wouldn’t argue against that, though they might spin who qualifies as a “bad guy”. Yeah sure, deplatforming isn’t enough because most of big tech has just cashed in on things, especially over the last year.

That said, I feel a little wary about big tech (not that Mozilla is necessary the big tech) using this as an excuse to promote themselves. I don’t need a world that tramples on my rights any more than I need a world that turns police into paramilitary just because I want a safe community. Community comes from working together, talking things out, not fighting each other.

So I understand the list of ideas in that post from Mozilla, I just don’t know how they’re going to do it.

Well said. I’m so glad that you are around this community in particular with me :) I’ve actually appended this to one of my files called “list of one-liners that I want to refresh me periodically”.

using this as an excuse to promote themselves

There’s an Italian comedy film from the 70s that always makes me laugh so much. I cannot find a single copy of the video with EN subtitles but it rolls like this:

[At the phone]
No, really, I don’t feel like coming. I also have a sort of appointment with the other guys at the café already…
Listen, but what kind of party is that?
It’s not like at 22:00 you’re all there dancing the circle dance? And I’m there, in a corner…
Ah no! If you are going to dance I’m not coming. No, no, I am not coming!

What do you say? Shall I go? Will people notice me more if I come and stand aside in a corner, or if I don’t come at all?
I’ll come.
I’ll come and sit next to a window, in profile, in the backlight… You’ll say: “Michele, come over there with us, come on!” And I’ll say: “You go, you go, I’ll join later”.
I am coming.
See you there.
No, I don’t feel like it, I am not coming. No.
Ok… Bye.*

So I imagine the conversations inside bigtech’ offices go something like this :) “Will people notice me more if we ban him or not? Will they notice me more if we ban him in the morning or the afternoon? No I’m not banning him, maybe removing one twit will make more headlines. Will people twit more under his profile if we don’t ban him, or will they twit more on other profiles if we ban him?”
