There’s not yet an open source implementation of the Switch server, although I believe it’s theoretically possible. The DS/Wii server has been fully reimplemented, open source. You could use it to play Animal Crossing: Wild World (2005) on a fully open source server, and it’d be the same idea.
I really like this idea of federated servers for video games. I don’t think it will work for every game but as a fan of 0AD myself that’d be pretty cool.
Time to make a FLOSS client/server implementation you can play without having to get a $300 proprietary console??
